Departing Napier we travel along the coast with views of Cape Kidnappers the site of Captain Cook's first meeting with local Maori. Hear stories of Cooks first encounter as well as the tale of Maui a Maori God. We travel through the village of Clive and head inland towards Havelock North through the many orchards of the Hawke's Bay region.
First stop Askerne Winery a small family owned winery founded by John and Katherine Loughlin. Askerne produce the largest range of varietal wines in Hawkes Bay and you will have the opportunity to taste bubbles, classic dry wines, aromatics and dessert wines.
We drive to top of Te Mata Peak elevation 399 meters. Te Mata is short for Te Mata y Rongakako the face of the giant. You will hear more
about this giant in stories told as we travel. From the top of Te Mata you will enjoy amazing 360 degree views of the Heretaunga Plains.
Next stop winery. Black Barn are well know for their styles of dry red and white wines especially their Chardonnay's that have won many
accolades.
Craggy range is our next port of call. Taste amazing wines from the Hawkes Bay and Martinborough on their stunning terrace at the rear
of the cellar door and enjoy a vine yard platter.
Now we drive to Tuki Tuki Valley and stop at a vantage point to take in amazing views of Te Mata Peak from Red Bridge Lookout.
We then travel along the Tuki Tuki river valley route undoubtedly one of the most scenic pastoral and vineyard drives in New Zealand.
Many compare this area to Tuscany. We wind our way through the river valley towards the coast and along the way we will stop often as there will be a lot of photographic opportunities.
We then hit the coast road once again and drive back to Napier crossing the 4 main rivers in the region with stories being told of the history and the naming of these arterial waterways that are the life blood of Hawke's Bay. We travel back to Napier over the reclaimed lands from the 1931 Earthquake learning about Napier's darkest day. We then drive into Napier and we take a short tour around the city pointing out all the highlights and places to visit before you return to your ship.
